TPD Arrests Two for Street Racing as Operation Southern Slow Down Kicks Off
July 14, 2025
As law enforcement agencies across the Southeast participate in Operation Southern Slow Down this week, the Tallahassee Police Department (TPD) is reminding the community of the dangers of reckless driving through both education and enforcement.
TPD recently concluded an investigation into a serious crash that occurred on May 14, 2025, in the 2100 block of West Tennessee Street. The crash involved a single vehicle whose driver sustained serious injuries. That individual has since recovered.
Through the work of TPD's Traffic Unit, detectives determined the vehicle was participating in an illegal street race with another vehicle, beginning near Appleyard Drive. Both drivers reached speeds exceeding twice the posted speed limit before the crash occurred. The second vehicle remained on scene, and the occupants cooperated with the investigation.
As a result of the investigation, arrest warrants were issued for both drivers on charges of Racing on Highways. One driver was also found to be operating without a valid license.
"Street racing, speeding, and aggressive driving endanger everyone on our roadways," said Chief Lawrence Revell. "TPD is committed to enforcing traffic laws and protecting the lives of those who live, work, and travel in our community."
The arrests come as TPD joins agencies across Florida and neighboring states, including Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee, for Operation Southern Slow Down, a week-long high-visibility traffic safety campaign running through Saturday, July 19. The initiative focuses on reducing speeding and aggressive driving through education, enforcement, and public awareness.
TPD urges all drivers to make responsible decisions when behind the wheel. Lives depend on it. For more information about Operation Southern Slow Down, visit https://www.floridalel.info/southern-slow-down.
