City of Tallahassee Office of the Inspector General Audit Function Earns Highest Marks in Triennial Peer Review
August 15, 2025
The City of Tallahassee Office of the Inspector General (OIG) successfully passed its triennial peer review of the audit function, earning the highest possible rating and confirming full compliance with all applicable professional auditing standards.
"This outstanding result reflects the dedication and professionalism of our audit staff," Dennis Sutton, Inspector General for the City of Tallahassee, said. "Combined with our recent accreditation by the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation for our investigative function, it demonstrates the overall excellence of the Office of Inspector General. Together, these independent assessments provide assurance that our audit and investigative work meet the highest standards and that we are fulfilling our mission to promote accountability, transparency and the effective use of public resources."
The independent peer review was conducted through the Association of Local Government Auditors (ALGA) by a three-member team of experienced audit professionals, two from the City of Colorado Springs, Colo., and one from the City of El Paso, Texas.
The review evaluated the OIG audit policies, procedures and completed audit work and determined that the OIG audit operations fully conform to the Generally Accepted Government Auditing Standards (GAGAS) issued by the U.S. Government Accountability Office and the International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing established by the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA).
The peer review team commended the OIG for its robust quality assurance process, comprehensive documentation and effective planning and execution of audits. They noted that these practices ensure accuracy, fairness and consistency in addressing audit objectives.
The OIG audit function operates with independence and objectivity, ensuring that all reviews are conducted without bias or undue influence. This commitment to impartial evaluation ensures that audit results are credible, reliable and focused solely on the facts.
Earlier this summer, the OIG also earned full reaccreditation from the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA). CFA assessors found the OIG to be 100 percent in compliance with all applicable investigative standards, noting no recommendations for improvement.
Meeting these high professional standards demonstrates the City's commitment to responsible, ethical government oversight and operational efficiency. Learn more about the OIG at Talgov.com.
